Factors that determine how long your mobility scooter battery lasts

As mentioned, there are a huge number of factors that go into how long your battery will last. These all need to be considered when estimating the lifespan of your battery, as well as how long it will last on a single charge.

Some of these factors include:

  • The type of battery (GEL, AGM, lithium ion)
  • How often you use your scooter
  • The weight of the vehicle or user
  • The temperature in which the battery is stored
  • How the battery’s charged

How long do different mobility scooter batteries last?

One of the factors that will determine how long your mobility scooter battery lasts is the type of battery. Batteries come in different sizes and with different amounts of energy to suit the size, purpose, and power of each scooter. It’s important that the battery you choose is the right one for your scooter, which is why we recommend only buying batteries through authorised suppliers.

There are three main types of mobility scooter batteries you may encounter:

  • GEL batteries (lead-acid): These batteries are generally recommended for daily mobility scooter users as they produce more cycles and can last longer. They are usually at a mid-range price point. On average, they last 12-18 months.
  • AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries (lead-acid): These are a good choice for people who only use their scooters occasionally. They produce cycles and are generally cheaper. On average, they last 12-18 months.
  • Battery packs (lithium-ion): These batteries are lighter, smaller, and have the longest lifespan of all the battery options – up to 4 years. They are a good choice for lightweight, portable scooters. These perks come at a price though, as Li-ion batteries are the most expensive of these three options.

How long do mobility scooter batteries last on a single charge?

Just how long a mobility scooter battery will last on a single charge depends on all the factors previously discussed including the steepness of the terrain, the size of the battery, and the weight of the scooter and user.

In general, a mid-sized scooter with a standard battery on gentle terrain will go around 25km on a single charge, while a more powerful battery may allow you to travel up to 45km.

What’s the lifespan of a mobility scooter battery?

A mobility scooter could last anywhere between 12 months to 4 years, depending on the type of battery and how the scooter is used. On average, a battery will last up to 18 months.

Manufacturers usually offer a 12-month warranty on batteries, so if yours stops working before then, get in touch with your supplier to get it checked out.

GEL batteries and AGM batteries usually have a shorter lifespan, whereas lithium-ion batteries last longer. More frequent use will also cause a battery to need replacing sooner.

Correctly charging your mobility scooter battery

One way to maximise the lifespan of your mobility scooter is to charge it correctly. Keeping it fully charged will also ensure that you’re getting the most out of it each time you leave the house. How often you should charge your mobility scooter battery depends on the type of battery. For specific advice, we recommend checking with the company you bought your battery or scooter from.

In general, you want to make sure that you’re charging the battery regularly to avoid ending up in a situation where you’re stranded somewhere with a flat battery or are unable to leave the house on time.

Here are some general tips for charging your battery to make them last:

  • Charge after each trip
  • Charge overnight
  • Don’t push your battery so it’s nearly empty – it’s better for the battery’s lifespan and your safety to top it up regularly
  • If you haven’t used your scooter recently, charge it up just to be sure
  • Only use the dedicated charger that comes with your scooter to maximise the lifespan

Storing your mobility scooter battery

Another factor that can impact how long your mobility scooter battery will last is how you store it. Generally, you should try to store your battery in a cool, dry place away from extremes in temperature and humidity. It’s also important to make sure it’s fully charged before storing it away.

Getting Regular Maintenance

Getting your mobility scooter serviced is important not just for the lifespan of the battery but also for your safety as a driver and for those around you. If your scooter is in good shape, we recommend getting a service once every year. By speaking to an expert, you’ll be able to get the best idea about how long your battery will last and what you can do to improve its performance.
