We usually think of soccer (or football) as a sport played on grass in muddy boots, but Brisbane has a strong community of players in powerchairs too.
Powerchair football is played with two teams of four on a basketball court. With strong guards on the front of their chairs, players can go in hard to win the ball without causing them damage.
Just like normal soccer, the formula is pretty simple. Get the ball in your opponent’s net and score a goal.
The competition gives powerchair users a way to utilise their physicality and skill in a fun and physically demanding way.
If you’re interested in watching a game, matches are played at the Bowen Hills YMCA. The next round is from midday to 3:45 p.m. this Saturday 23 March.
