For many mobility scooter users, getting around on public transport is a must. If you usually use your scooter on a bus, you may be wondering if you can take your scooter on the train or the CityCat.
The short answer is yes, you can, provided your scooter fits within the guidelines. The entire TransLink network as the same standards across all south-east Queensland, so if you’re already using your scooter on a bus, chances are you’ll be able to use it on other forms of public transport.
Getting to know the TransLink Guidelines
In order to travel on a bus, train or CityCat, your scooter must fit in the allotted wheelchair space – that’s 1300mm long, 800mm wide.
Your scooter itself must be 750mm wide or less and the height must be 1500mm or less when sitting down.
The maximum combined weight of the scooter and user must not exceed 300kg.
Accessibility on the Train
If you’re planning a long journey and are unsure about whether a train station is accessible, Queensland Rail has a full list of accessible stops in south-east Queensland. Their station access guide informs you whether each station has independent access, assistance access or limited access.
In general, most stations are fine, but some can only be accessed via stairs, including Chelmer, Gaythorne and Moorooka, so it always pays to plan ahead.
Accessibility on the Ferry
The CityCat ferries are fully accessible for passengers who use a wheelchair, with wide access and seating inside. Cruising the Brisbane River is a perfect way to spend an afternoon and your scooter certainly doesn’t prevent you from enjoying the experience.
The Queensland Government has comprehensive information on accessibility on the ferry. According to their website, the following CityCat terminals are fully accessible:
- Mowbray Park
- New Farm Park
- Northshore Hamilton
- QUT Gardens Point
- Sydney Street
- University of Queensland
- West End.
The following stops have assisted access and are overseen by trained CityCat crew:
- Apollo Road
- Guyatt Park
- South Bank 1 and 2.
It’s important to note that the CityFerry and Cross River Ferry are not fully accessible.
